Beware Illegal Tooth-Whitening Kits Available Online

home tooth whitening kit

Hydrogen Peroxide is a bleaching agent that is used in cosmetic tooth-whitening applications. In high doses, the chemical can damage gums and even cause tooth loss. We want to warn patients to beware of buying online kits that may exceed levels stipulated by safety guidelines for the quantity of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Buying kits from your dentist or chemist for self-application is safe as these kits will adhere to regulations. The amount of Hydrogen Peroxide permitted for use in home kits is sensibly regulated to 0.1%. Whitening procedures conducted under supervision of a dentist can use products containing up to 6% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Tests conducted by consumer rights magazine Which? found nearly 1 in 3 samples of tooth-whitening products bought online contained over the legal limit of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide. These levels could seriously burn your gums via (almost inevitable) accidental contact during self-application.

By far the safest and most effective way to whiten your teeth is to speak to your dentist about available procedures and have the treatment safely administered by dental care professionals.
